A Bare Woman Mutters Nothing…
Candace Hill-Montgomery in conversation with Amy Tobin

This event was held on Saturday 6 June 2026 between Candace Hill-Montgomery and curator and writer Amy Tobin, on the occasion of Hill-Montgomery’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, A Bare Woman Mutters Nothing… (5 June – 18 July 2026) and London Gallery Weekend (5–7 June 2026).

Amy Tobin has written extensively on Hill-Montgomery’s practice, including her essay ‘Candace Hill-Montgomery, Against Containment’, published in Art History, Volume 46, Issue 1 (2023), pp. 38-67.

Moving across assemblage, collage, painting, photography, textile and language, Hill-Montgomery creates works that combine social commentary with poetic lyricism. She developed an experimental approach in relation to her experience growing up in postwar New York City, alongside the revolutionary activism of the time. The exhibition brought together works made between 1971 and 2026.
