Stages | Eyeliner by Knut Henrik Henriksen
A response by Adrian Rifkin
Adrian Rifkin shared his response to Knut Henrik Henriksen‘s site-responsive work Eyeliner (2025) on 23 July 2025. This event was part of Stages, a series of three solo presentations by Andrea Büttner, Knut Henrik Henriksen and Lubaina Himid held in short sequence between 2 July – 9 August 2025.
Eyeliner (2011–) is a site-responsive pastel drawing; an architectonic intervention that is at once subtle and grandiose. With the simple gesture of drawing a line in a colour used in makeup, Henriksen brings the viewer’s attention to the features of the gallery. Eyeliner is related to a larger body of work he has developed around ideas of ‘architectural doubt’ and ‘architectural frustration’ where the artist visualises the historical changes a building has undergone and the doubt that accompanies these transformations. Buildings previously re-articulated via ‘architectural doubts’ include Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, Kunstmuseum Bern and Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier.
