Andrea Büttner

2 – 12 July 2025

Event: Wednesday 9 July, 6 – 8pm
Drinks and readings by the Hollybush Gardens team from Büttner’s publication Shame (2020), Koenig Books

Three works by Andrea Büttner are brought together: Ancestor Dumplings (2011), a sculpture of rounded clay balls which have to be kept moist throughout the exhibition evoke questions of care, intimacy and productivity. Benches (corner seat) (2010), a bench made from plastic crates and planks of wood is placed in a corner of the gallery, resonating with Büttner’s interest in shame and its attendant relationship with penance. The work also offers a site of repose to listen to the sound piece Roth Reading (2006). In 1982, Dieter Roth represented Switzerland at the Venice Biennale and his diary was included in the presentation as a handwritten exhibition catalogue. Here, Büttner reads all of the passages referencing shame and embarrassment, projecting his words and emotions through her own voice.
